Girls'Day Akademie Visits inovex

Interested girls from the Drais-Gemeinschaftsschule school in Karlsruhe get a taste of working in IT.

(Karlsruhe, 15.03.2018) On 7th and 14th March 2018, IT service provider inovex invited the Karlsruhe area local "Girls'Day Akademie" to visit their Karlsruhe premises. 15 interested girls aged 12 to 13 from the Drais-Gemeinschaftsschule school in Karlsruhe took advantage of the opportunity to explore the varied and forward-looking world of IT.

Under the guidance of inovex CTO Christian Meder and his colleagues Marco Geiger, Tanja Ulianova, Alessa Radkohl and Arnold Bechtoldt, the girls spent their first day programming their own musical compositions using Sonic PI. The second day focused on "virtual worlds", and the girls learned to use their own smartphones to experience a rollercoaster in 3D and to design their own labyrinths. The girls were extremely interested in the material presented and obviously thoroughly enjoyed both days.

The "Girls'Day Akademie" is an initiative created jointly by the German Federal Employment Agency's Baden-Württemberg office, Südwestmetall – The Baden-Wuerttemberg Employers' Association of the Metal and Electrical Industry, and the non-profit educational institute BBQ Berufliche Bildung gGmbH. Its goal is to encourage girls to enter scientific, technical and IT professions and to support them in their study and career choices.

The Akademie is thematically related to the "Girls'Day Mädchen-Zukunftstag" initiative and targets girls in classes 7 to 10 who are interested in the sciences and technology. Members meet weekly during the school year and the programme can be implemented by any school providing a general education. Participating girls learn scientific and technological principles through hands-on experience at companies or colleges. The programme also includes communication and presentation courses to ensure that girls learn effective presentation skills. These will stand them in good stead both at school and later in their professional lives.

Youth development at inovex

inovex has been promoting youth development schemes for many years, including even the very youngest children in their support initiatives. The company has already supported several Initiative Devoxx4kids programmes, which hold workshops to teach children the basics of programming, electronics and robotics through play. The pupils of the Weinbrennerschule school in Karlsruhe received inovex-sponsored fischertechnik construction kits for their elective technology programme. The company is particularly keen to get girls interested in pursuing careers in IT. inovex held a Girls'Day last year, and this year, on 26th April 2018, the company will once again open its doors to young female technology enthusiasts.
