Our Projects

Below is an overview of some of the projects that we have implemented jointly with our clients.

1 & 1 Internet AG

1 & 1 Internet AG

Business Intelligence (BI)

In an internet company like 1&1 Internet AG, the log files from the web and ad servers alone create such large volumes of data that they simply can no longer be processed using traditional database technologies. For this reason, the vector-oriented database for log file analysis was set to be replaced by a big-data solution based on Apache Hadoop. Hadoop may be the name on everyone's lips, but true Hadoop projects on this scale are still the exception.

This was a particularly attractive challenge for us, as an innovative technology provider. We collaborated with the 1&1 team to complete it successfully, thus proving that Hadoop is ready to be deployed in "real life" situations. Our mandate when constructing the Hadoop-based storage and computing cluster ranged from designing the solution to the data warehouse section, including Pentaho data integration, right through to the implementation of the actual MapReduce jobs.

Bosch Audit (Mobile)

Bosch Audit (Mobile)

Application Development

When Bosch's central purchasing department, with 6,000 employees, audits its vendors in accordance with the guidelines provided by the German Association of the Automotive Industry, it involves a great deal of work, time and expense. A tablet solution for mobile use was therefore requested. It needed clear structures, simple operation and handwriting recognition to guarantee fewer errors and much faster processes.

inovex's mobile development team was delighted to take on the development of this mobile auditing solution. We implemented the tablet solution using HTML5 and native iOS technology. Of course, the application is integrated seamlessly into Bosch's backend systems so that the data can be cleanly incorporated into the business systems with no media gaps.

Bosch (Liferay)

Bosch (Liferay)

Application Development

As a Liferay Platinum Partner, inovex is naturally required to be a particularly competent solution partner for Liferay applications. At Robert Bosch GmbH, we have already been able to fulfill this requirement in a variety of different situations and on different scales. Whether they need one-day consulting sessions and workshops or larger custom implementation projects lasting several months, Bosch can rely on our Liferay knowledge and skills.

At Bosch, for example, we integrated a client/server application with the Liferay user management system, developed a single-sign-on solution for calling up Liferay content via a browser without requiring a new login, enhanced the standard scope of Liferay with new functions and linked Liferay portals to the internal backend systems. In addition, we are always available to provide quick responses to Liferay questions.

IT Engineering & Operations

india.com, 1&1 Internet AG's free mail application for the Indian market, was developed by inovex in 2010  and was initially set up to handle 1 billion emails a year. When we were contracted for the software development project, we were also commissioned to design and create the productive systems. These include architecture, hardware sizing, bare metal deployment and the setting up of a highly available mail and web infrastructure.

The productive environment was scaled in 2 steps from 70 to 200 servers and has already changed physical data centres twice, once offline and once online, with no downtime. For this special mission, inovex put together a hard-hitting team of senior engineers who are extremely experienced in open-source data centre management and who are not afraid of tackling this type of complex challenge.

Application Development

1&1 Internet AG, one of the world's most renowned companies in the free mail industry, was facing the challenge of developing a completely new, standalone mail system for the Indian market – and of doing so in a very short space of time. Technically speaking, this was a greenfield project. inovex accepted the challenge and implemented the entire mail system, from its design to the web interface, right through to a tested, productive system.

It was clear to us that such a large mail system can only be successful if its software development is tailored precisely to the requirements of its data centre operations. As inovex was also responsible for creating the data centre systems, we were able to function as a true DevOps team. This enabled us to use an interdisciplinary approach during the design phase to determine how best to run india.com at the data centre level.

maxdome

maxdome

Application Development

maxdome, Germany's largest online video store, was originally a joint venture between United Internet and ProSiebenSat.1 Media and was operated by United Internet. The partners then went their separate ways, and maxdome needed their own IT infrastructure under the auspices of ProSiebenSat.1 Media – and they needed it fast. In order to do this, it was important to determine how to separate the systems logically and technically from their old environments and migrate them to their new one.

Using technological analysis, reverse engineering and detective skills, the inovex team worked under considerable time pressure to design and carry out the extraction, migration and integration of the systems into their new adjoining systems – mission accomplished! Our collaboration began with a Web 2.0 frontend project for maxdome end devices. Who could have imagined how far our collaboration with maxdome would go?

IT Engineering & Operations

On any given day at maxdome, processes generated by thousands of customers must be supported (registration, customisation, bookmarks, billing, etc.). It's easy to imagine that their systems need to be rock solid. The IT requirements are anything but trivial, particularly when it comes to ensuring availability at peak load times (prime time) or handling the different channels via which videos can be requested and output.

Our vision was to achieve these goals using open-source software, a sustainable IT infrastructure, maximum automation and outstanding engineers. At the same time, however, the IT infrastructure for an online TV provider cannot be static or inflexible. This is an innovative industry which is continuously launching new products and special offers on the market – and therefore in its IT systems. A project which is right in our wheelhouse!

Mercedes Benz Trucks / Daimler AG

Mercedes Benz Trucks / Daimler AG

Business Intelligence (BI)

Mercedes-Benz Trucks serve many international logistics customers via a multi-step value chain (sales/leasing, service, maintenance, replacement parts). In order to gain a transparent view of the results of these globally distributed business processes, Mercedes-Benz Trucks wanted to consolidate all their business data into a single BI system. The aim was for 100 users to be able to analyse this business data.

We accepted the challenge. We designed the BI solution and modelled the data, used MS SQL Server to set up an international data warehouse, connected 15 source systems, integrated 50 extract files and created more than 100 SSIS packages. This resulted in a high-performance, user-friendly productive BI system with which Mercedes-Benz Trucks can automatically call up the latest data in the desired level of transparency.

Rutronik

Rutronik

Business Intelligence (BI)

Rutronik, European leader in electronic components distribution, was having massive performance problems when running statistics and reports in its ERP system. Instead of investing in additional hardware, inovex had the idea of outsourcing all reporting to an independent BI system based on Microsoft SQL Server, thus relieving the load on the core systems. This idea resulted in the creation of a system which is still being successfully expanded today.

The reports are all based on the same, consolidated database. For the company's management team, it is vital to be able to display global revenue at a glance. It is also essential that executives can drill down to individual deals closed per sales team member and day – in just a few mouse clicks. Bonus and commissions calculations have now been enhanced accordingly. This solution provides a level of transparency and flexibility that could hardly have been achieved by other means.

Travian Games

Travian Games

Business Intelligence (BI)

Under what circumstances would online gamers be prepared to pay real money for virtual game assets? How can a company like Travian Games, the world's leading provider of browser games, create compelling gameplay to entice players to pay for in-game assets? The key to this knowledge lies in analysing in-game transactions carried out by more than 120 million registered users.

We worked with our partner, Pentaho, to implement the business intelligence solution used to evaluate these large numbers of transactions. At its core, the BI system comprises a high-performance data warehouse (MySQL, Infobright) in which the data from the game world is extracted and converted using Pentaho Data Integration. 50 trained users now work with the solution, using their analyses to optimise the games.
