Project start with Zephyr
Use Zephyr® to successfully implement your next embedded or IoT device – we’re happy to advise you on using Zephyr for product development.
Zephyr Quick Start
Embedded systems and edge computing connect the devices we surround ourselves with. This not only enriches everyday life, but also significantly improves industrial processes. Thanks to our interdisciplinary expertise, we can meet the high requirements for security, maintainability and reliability of the systems in a cost-efficient manner.

What is the Zephyr Project?
Zephyr® is an open-source, real-time operating system and a framework for the development of microcontroller-based devices with limited energy and storage capacities. Over the past few years, Zephyr has established itself as the most successful open-source RTOS on the market, and it is currently being successfully implemented in everything from hearing aids to wind turbines.

How does Zephyr work?
Zephyr is a broad framework which supports development teams throughout the entire product life cycle. Its highly modular code base allows a variety of components, such as an RTOS kernel, drivers, and middleware, to be combined at build time. The result is software which is tailored precisely to product requirements and which can be implemented on what are known as
“resource-constrained devices”. A framework for creating and running tests is as much a component of Zephyr as ready-made solutions for firmware over-the-air updates, logging, or the
creation of technical documentation.

What benefits does the Zephyr Project provide?
Developers can use technologies like Kconfig for modelling software features and the devicetree for describing hardware characteristics parallel to the source code to create maintainable
software which is both easy to port and perfectly designed to allow future expansion – and all without compromising performance or quality. On the contrary, many of the requirements which
manufacturers must fulfil, such as those stipulated by the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), can be easily implemented using the tools included in the framework.

Challenges in introducing Zephyr
Particularly for developers with no prior experience in embedded Linux, the multifaceted concepts and tools used are initially confusing. The result is that the learning curve is extremely steep, especially initially. Companies without knowledge of the technology or its correct usage run the risk that much of the available potential will go unused. inovex therefore provides training courses, technical coaching, and experienced developers to support you in your first forays into modern embedded software development with Zephyr.
